William Leland “Bill” Canine, 85, died Saturday, June 9, 2007 in Newberry.
Mr. Canine was born May 28, 1922, in St. Louis, Missouri; he was a son of the late William Leland and Martha Newman Canine. He was a graduate of Duke University and the University of Chicago. He was a member of sigma Alpha Epsilon and Beta Omega Sigma, life member of American Philatelic Society, the Duke University Half-Century Club and a life member of the 4th Marine Division Association. He was formerly a member of the English Department at Duke University, director of Development at Hollins College, Va. and Newberry College, SC and of the Nature Conservancy in Washington, D. C. where he was also the editor of ”The Nature Conservancy News”. Mr. Canine published short stories and articles in many magazines and in retirement published some 500 crossword puzzles. He was an officer in the U. S. Marine Corps and a veteran of World Was II, the recipient of the Presidential Unit Citation and the Purple Heart for wounds received as a platoon commander on Iwo Jima. Mr. Canine was a member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church and a former member of Newberry Country Club.
Surviving are his wife Emily Anderson Canine, son David Bryant Canine and his wife Theresa of Dallas, Tx.; son Andrew Leland Canine and his wife Sandra of Chesapeake Beach, Md.; daughter Helen C. Summer of Columbia; daughter Amy and her husband John A. Kissane of Athens Ga.; grandsons Sky, Orion and Colin Canine of Chesapeake Beach, Md.; David B. Summer, III of Columbia; William Kissane of Athens Ga.; granddaughters Nitasha Canine of Annapolis, Md. Emily Summer of Columbia; and Emma Kissane of Athens Ga. and a step-grandson Stephen O’Rourke of Dallas Tx. A sister predeceased him.
Memorial funeral services were conducted 2:00 PM Tuesday at St. Lukes Episcopal Church. Interment was in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
