Shapard Ashley was admitted to the Alabama State Bar in 1978. He is a native of Montgomery, was educated at local public schools, and received his B.A. degree, magna cum laude, from Duke University and his J.D. in 1978 and LL.M. in Taxation in 1987 from the University of Alabama. While at the University of Alabama School of Law, Shap served on the Honor Court and was a member of the Moot Court Board and the Bench and Bar Legal Honor Society. Prior to joining Capell & Howard, he clerked for Judge R. E. Varner, Middle District of Alabama. Shap's area of concentration is commercial real estate, with emphasis on shopping center development. He is a fellow of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys. Shap's activities outside of the firm are focused on bar association involvement, professional education, promoting the appreciation and knowledge of history, and participating both on local non-profit boards and at the local parish and diocesan levels of his church. He has served as Chairman of the bar association's Real Estate and Probate Section as well as its History & Archives Committee, which implemented and administers that association's Legal Milestones historical marker program. He is a lecturer at various real estate seminars of ABICLE, Lawyers Title Insurance Corporation, Mississippi Valley/Old Republic National Title Insurance Company and Dixie Land Title Association.
